Sarkodie released “Happy Day” only one month before Ghana’s 2020 presidential and legislative elections, in which he subtly supported Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party with the line “Nana Toaso.”

After the viral song was released, Kuami Eugene said he had no idea what he had gotten himself into because he hadn’t intended to be on a song for a campaign that might affect his brand.

“I was unaware that was the course it was taking. The fact that Sarkodie delivered me the song with the opening rap, “It is a beautiful brand new day,” will be attested to by him. I had to make a hook that matched it since that was all I had. I composed a chorus that was praising God since it was his concept, and I had no clue that it would turn out to be something problematic in the media,” he admitted in an interview on the Delay Show in April 2023.

Some Ghanaians have consistently argued that Kuami played the victim to avoid criticism. He has, however, refuted the assertion and provided evidence to support it.

“I first heard the second verse when I was on set. I was surprised, so I looked over at my manager, and we both chuckled. It should be between my label and Sarkodie’s label; it is not my conversation to have. He could have called him if he had sent the ‘Nana Toaso’ portion, he pointed out.

“My mother called me and asked why I was becoming interested in politics because I had just recently begun. She informed me that Sarkodie had been playing the game for ten years, while I had just recently entered it. I admitted to her that I didn’t know.
